Role Overview
The Directorate-General for Digital Services (DIGIT), Unit DIGIT.C.3 “Data Centres & Private Cloud” of the European Commission, is seeking a Senior Expert in Unix / Linux Operating System Platforms to support the delivery, evolution and operation of Linux Hosting Corporate Services across the Commission’s private cloud and datacenter environment.
The selected consultant will work closely with internal EC teams and an external managed services provider to ensure secure, reliable and high-performance infrastructure supporting critical information systems, including AI-ready platforms operating at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical assistance on Linux Hosting services and related technologies (AI support platforms, networking, Kubernetes, virtualization, storage).
- Design, deploy and maintain Unix / Linux OS stacks with strong security, reliability and availability standards.
- Support lifecycle activities: planning, design, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement.
- Develop deep understanding of business processes, ensuring service performance and operational excellence.
- Participate in requirements gathering, strategic roadmap definition, and IT architectural planning.
- Coordinate technical governance and change processes across multiple technology stakeholders.
- Supervise work performed as part of managed service agreements, ensuring compliance with DIGIT policies and SLAs.
- Produce and maintain high-quality technical documentation and reporting (weekly progress reports, meeting minutes, project deliverables).
- Conduct project management, performance monitoring and troubleshooting activities.
- Drive innovation and support decision-making for future strategy and investment cases related to Linux hosting platforms.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- University degree equivalent to EQF Level 7 (Master) OR bachelor + at least 5 years combined experience in IT hosting, security, networking and virtualization.
- Minimum 10 years experience in datacentre operations, OS management, networking, storage, virtualization and IT security.
- More than 5 years experience delivering and supervising IT hosting services with proven experience deploying infrastructures to support AI platforms at scale.
- Experience with Kubernetes and DevOps methodologies.
- Experience supervising external managed service providers and data centre capacity management.
- Demonstrated ability applying Agile methodologies.
- Strong experience working in multicultural, international environments with a service-oriented approach.
- Ability to obtain security clearance according to EC rules.
Required Certifications
- Linux Certified Systems Engineer (RedHat certifications considered a strong advantage).
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or equivalent.
Language Requirements
- Fluency in English at level C1 or higher (CEFR), spoken and written.
Work Environment & Delivery Conditions
- On-site work in Luxembourg is the default delivery mode.
- Up to 2 days of teleworking per week may be authorised.
- Consultant must be able to arrive onsite within 2 hours when teleworking.
- Participation in possible on-call rotations and extended working hours.
